Many people underestimate the importance of a footer in website. Some see it as little more than a place to store links, when it actuality it should be a handy conclusion to the page that offers something of use to your visitors, while also rounding off the actual web design itself nicely.
So how do you go about creating the perfect website footer? Here are just a few things that can help.
Keep It Uncluttered
In days gone by website footers were used as catch all places for all of the links that you couldn’t fit anywhere else on the site. SEO companies were particularly guilty of this, as they would ram footers full of links to pages that attempted to target different localities. This led to cluttered footers that really offered little of value to users, simply because they were too difficult to navigate. Keep it clean, crisp and simple and you are off to a good start.
Include Key Links And Contact Info
So how do you go about making the footer useful? Keeping the above in mind, it should still be a place where you place links, but they should point only to key areas of the site and ideally kept to a minimum. Furthermore, those who have scrolled to the bottom of the page should have a means of contacting you once they get there, so put a phone number in to make things a little easier. If you site doesn’t have a copyright notice you may find it difficult to tackle those who may steal your content. This is quick and simple, so just put a basic copyright notice in place, ideally in a low contrast font colour so it doesn’t distract way from the main features of the footer.
Try To Include Graphical Elements
Putting graphics into your footer can be difficult. Avoiding them altogether will make the website footer come off as a dry list of links that doesn’t really encourage people to keep exploring the website. However, overuse of graphical elements may end up distracting away from the important info the footer actually contains, plus they may clash with other areas of the website. The best tactic is to keep it simple, once again. Consider using a company logo and some basic graphics to represent the information the footer contains.
Make It Readable
Readability is just as important in your footer as it is with the rest of the web design. Keep colours and contrast in mind so your text doesn’t meld into the background.
Maintain The Theme
Perhaps most importantly of all, the footer needs to be designed with the website’s main theme in mind. Remember that this footer will be standardised across all of your pages, so it needs to be in keeping with all of them to reach maximum effectiveness. Be creative, but don’t go overboard with changing things.
