Beginners guide to advertising on Instagram.

As a business owner (especially a new business owner) you need to make sure that you are committing a decent amount of time and resources into pushing and growing your business. One of the ways you can do this is through social media channels such as Instagram.
Over the past few years Instagram has grown massively. There are currently 600 million users on Instagram and this number keeps on growing. But it’s not the number of users that makes this platform a valuable marketing tool, it’s the level of engagement you get as a brand.
Often when you post on other social media platforms it feels like your talking to an empty room. You don’t get any likes, comments or retweets. But not with Instagram. Even if you have a small audience you will still get some responses especially if you use relevant hashtags.
Instagram is a very visual platform and therefore as a business selling various products or providing various services it is important to make sure your images are sharp and crisp and best of all if they are natural.
Instagram has several tools that can help your business grow and reach new customers. Since 2015 you can now advertise directly through your Instagram account. You can do this by going though Facebook ads tool and setup the ads. This can range from a single image or a 60 second video or even a collection of images. There are also a range of options so that your ad is optimised to perform the way you want it. For example if you want to generate awareness of a product or service , increase your reach or even raise awareness in your local area there are a range of tools available.
There is also a fix coming soon in 2017. At Pear Digital we work on a lot of Shopify projects for customers and one thing our customers find annoying is that you can’t place a clickable website link on product images. This is about to change as Shopify and Instagram have teamed up and soon you will be able to tag your product photo and create a seamless checkout process for your customers from Instagram. Even more reason to start advertising on Instagram.
Hashtags are the lifeblood of Instagram. You are not going to get very far if you don’t use Hashtags. As a business owner you need to research into what hashtags work and get the most responses. This is through trial and error. One top tip is to create hashtags of your brand. For example if your business is called XYZ have #XYZ in your lists, if you sell individual products such as brown shoes for example, create a product hashtag such as #brownshoes. Also don’t spam a lot of hashtags the recommended amount is usually around 5-10.
Last thing we want to mention is make sure you engage with your customers and audience. If they like or leave a polite comment on your posts return the favour and like one of theirs and even leave a comment. This will make your brand more visible and you will gradually be noticed more and more.
