Four Reasons Why Voice Search is Vital
February 1, 2019
Voice Search is Here
Voice search seems like one of those technologies that’s way off in the future.
But think about how often you use it. Every time you ask Siri a question, you’re using voice search. If you have an Amazon Echo, Alexa’s using voice search to find whatever it is you’re looking for.
The simple fact is that the rise of voice search is one of the most important SEO trends for 2019 and beyond. Here, we’re going to look at four key reasons why it needs to be a part of your online marketing strategy.
Reason #1 – It’s Everywhere
Voice search isn’t some emerging technology that’s only just reaching prominence. Siri has been with us for years, as has Google own voice search technology. Any modern computer or smartphone has it built in. And of course, you have the rise of smart home devices. Many of these use voice commands as well.
The point is that voice search is no longer a fancy add-on. It’s becoming the standard in almost every modern device that’s capable of connecting to the internet. It may not be long before voice-activated TVs become the norm too.
Reason #2 – People Are Using It
Just because a technology is available, it doesn’t mean that people are using it.
That’s not the case with voice search. In fact, current projections show that this type of searching will soon overtake the more traditional text-based searches that you’re currently optimising towards.
According to some estimates, about 50% of all searches will be made via voice commands by 2020. That number is only likely to rise in the years that follow.
Preparing now will ensure you’re ahead of your competitors by the time that voice search overtakes text-based searching.
Reason #3 – It’s a Different Type of Search
You can’t assume that what works for text-based search will also work for voice search. You need separate strategies to deal with them both.
Here’s how it works.
Voice search focuses on semantic search. That means it tries to identify the searcher’s intent, rather than just delivering results based on the words in the query. That’s why voice searches are usually questions rather than simply statements of keywords.
We’re seeing search engines adapt to this form of searching for text as well. But the fact is that your website has to start answering questions more directly to adapt to voice search.
Reason #4 – It’s Getting More Accurate
Early voice search technology had difficulty figuring out specific accents.
That’s not really the case anymore. The technology is better than ever at identifying what people are saying to it. Plus, the use of Artificial Intelligence means that the likes of Siri and Alexa learn constantly.
Simply put, they’re getting better. Because of this, people are going to use voice search more and more. That’s why we’re seeing the trend towards it overtaking text-based search that we mentioned earlier.
